Never Give Up.
In 2017, Lizzo released a single named “Truth Hurts.”
You have heard this song; or at the very least, I’m certain that you have seen Tweets riffing on the theme:
“I took a DNA test and I’m 100% b*tch”
What you may not know is that the song initially flopped. Upon release, it failed to garner public interest.
But Lizzo did not give up. She continued making music; and she continued promoting the song after its release. Through her efforts, she got the song featured in the Netflix movie, Someone Great. The song also became widely known through a viral video on TikTok.
Between the movie and the viral video, Lizzo’s music finally gained the exposure that helped “Truth Hurts” achieve critical mass.
The song “Truth Hurts” was “discovered” in 2019, fully two years after its initial release, and went on to become a smash #1 hit on the Billboard charts.
This is a highly unusual path for a hit single. Most songs either do well right away, or they gather dust forever.
But “meritocracy” is largely a myth. Random chance is a huge factor in determining which songs happen to take off at the time of their release; and as Lizzo has shown, perseverance can be the key to overcoming a poor initial reception. The initial problem wasn’t with the song itself; the problem was simply that not enough people had heard it. Once it gained exposure, it grew in popularity, and went on to become a huge hit.
Let Lizzo chart you a roadmap to success. If your initial efforts flopped, that’s not a referendum on you or the quality of your work. If your initial efforts flopped, it just means you have to keep hustling to achieve that critical mass that will catapult you to the recognition that you deserve.
Never give up!
