I’m pleased to announce Curb Thy Vanity, a new comic short film directed by Anna Gillock. The film was entered into the competition for a local film festival just this week!
The Team Behind Curb Thy Vanity
Anna Gillock: Director

Curb Thy Vanity is Anna Gillock’s directorial debut, and I am so pleased to have had the opportunity to work with her. Anna’s imaginative approach to visual storytelling gave the film its distinctive personality. Anna Gillock is also one of the film’s Producers, and she worked on many different aspects of the project to help make it happen: including recruiting volunteer crew members and extras!
Jonathan Edwin Shay: Director of Photography
Jonathan Edwin Shay is a local area instructor who teaches film classes. His invaluable assistance as one of the film’s Producers was key to the project. Jack Shay was more than the Director of Photography: he was also the camera operator, and took charge of lighting, rigging, and post-production color correction, and more.
Jesse S. Smith: Screenplay & etc.
My screenplay for the film’s dreamlike story was loosely based on Shakespeare’s King Henry IV Parts 1 & 2. (I also produced the movie, played two roles in the film, edited the footage, and recorded the soundtrack.)
And Many More!
I am so grateful to Anna Gillock for directing, and to Jack Shay for his role as Director of Photography, and to everyone who participated:
including our Production Assistant, Joel Matthews;
and the stars of the show: Kristine Demien, Michael E. Swanson, Melissa Weiser, Grace N. Petersen, and Sophie Reed, plus special guests.
The cast and crew were all volunteers for this project. Many people worked together to make this possible. You are all amazing!
The Plot of Curb Thy Vanity
Caution: Contains Spoilers!
In the film’s impressionist visual narrative, the earnest but bungling Harry (played by Jesse S. Smith, that’s me)

verbally spars with his “best frenemy,” the smack-talking lovable rogue Falstaff (also played by me),

for the entertainment of a house party

including the reliable Bardolf (played by Michael E. Swanson)

and several other Partygoers (played by, from top left: Sophie Reed; our incredible Production Assistant, Joel Matthews; and Grace N. Petersen; plus special guests!).

But when the Hostess (played by Anna Gillock) answers the door,

it turns out the consequences of Harry’s disputes have come knocking.
Now he must plead his case before the court of the Chief Justice (played larger than life by the incredible Kristine Demien), who speaks on behalf of public opinion.

Will Harry’s newfound devotion to self-improvement

help him to reclaim his seat on the Council?

And if so, will Falstaff ever forgive Harry for leaving him behind?

Most mysteriously, whose side is secret agent Hotspur really on, as she repeatedly influences the outcome of these events? (played by Melissa Weiser in an unforgettable performance)

The Story Behind Curb Thy Vanity
I met Anna Gillock, Jack Shay, Michael E. Swanson, and Joel Matthews in the fall of 2023 when we were all working together behind the scenes on the Ambition Pictures sci-fi movie LifeCycle 63, directed by Phillip Wade. Helping to film that project inspired me to put together a screenplay for an experimental short film; and then I somehow talked my amazing friends into helping me film it in the summer of 2024.
Playing two different characters presented an exciting technical challenge. My lines as “Falstaff” were filmed several months prior to the main filming. Then during the main shoot, Anna Gillock directed that my lines as “Harry” should be filmed from a different camera angle. In doing so, her creative direction creates a striking visual contrast between the two characters. Jack Shay then color-graded the video footage for visual consistency, and I edited the result into the final film.
I also composed and recorded the soundtrack: including the incidental music; as well as a couple of original songs under my rock band name, Flumergex; and a rousing rendition of Ludwig van Beethoven’s timeless masterpiece, Symphony No. 7 in A Major, Movement ii, Allegretto, performed with modern-sounding drum machine and layered electric guitars.
Falstaff Always Gets the Last Word
Curb Thy Vanity is a first effort in many respects, and doubtless signals a wave of amazing things to come. We’re pleased to have entered it into a local film festival competition. It will likely be several months before we learn whether or not they have decided to screen it. In the meantime, the other producers and I are all engaged in a variety of other projects; and, speaking on behalf of all the cast and crew, we all look forward to working with you in various capacities in the near future, and we hope you will enjoy the show! Have a fantastic day.
