Once you’ve been working towards your life goals for a while, it becomes time to review your results and refocus on your goals. As you review your results, ask yourself: Are you achieving the results that you wanted? Are things headed in the right direction?
Most people skip this step
Taking some time to review your results is a crucial step towards achieving success; and yet, most people don’t do this. Most people skip this step; and that is why most people don’t achieve the results that they want to achieve. They either keep going, doing the same thing they’ve always done; or else they give up. But you are going to do something different, because you are on the path to greater things and more and more success over time. In order to achieve that success, you are going to review the results that your efforts have produced thus far.
You need metrics
In order to review your results, it’s essential to have measurable metrics that quantify the results you’re achieving. Are you achieving the results that you wanted to achieve? You will know in an instant when you can compare measurable metrics.
For example, if you’re trying to lose weight, you can compare today’s weight against last week’s weight. If today’s weight is less, then you’re on the right course!
In another example, if you’re trying to increase your income, compare the income that you have now to your income from six months ago. If your income has increased, then you’re doing something right! If your income has decreased or stayed the same, then that’s something that you are going to want to look at.
Write it down
It’s essential to write these kinds of metrics down. If you try to just keep it in your head, the comparison becomes subjective, and your feelings tend to cloud your perceptions and your memories.
We think, as human beings, that we are rational; and we believe that our perceptions are completely objective. But it has been demonstrated scientifically, over and over, that in fact our emotions tend to cloud our memories and the way we perceive both our current circumstances and our past circumstances.
For a truly objective comparison, it’s essential to write down the results that you’re achieving, so that you can compare them unclouded by bias or cognitive recall, so you can have a truly objective basis for the comparison of your results.
And as you review the results of your efforts, consider if your efforts are bringing you closer to your actual goals.
Have your goals changed in the meantime?
You may also want to reconsider at some point if your goals have changed. Are you still attempting to achieve what you were trying to achieve at the beginning of this process?
Sometimes, over time we realize that our values have shifted, or that our assumptions have been proven incorrect. There is no shame in that! If you learn something new, and you grow as a person based on what you’ve learned, you’re not being wishy-washy! You’re becoming a better person because you have learned something about yourself, and you’ve learned something about the world. So be willing to change your mind! That’s the sign of a truly strong, resilient individual. That’s true leadership, if you’re willing to change your mind. Somebody who has an open intellectual mindset should be willing to change their mind when presented with new information.
Keep your eyes on the prize
Focus on your priorities. You are becoming the person who you want to be! You are moving towards a future in which you are the future self that you’ve dreamed of becoming.
Make your future self a reality. Make your own dreams come true. You can achieve more than you’ve ever thought possible, but it’s never going to be easy. You have to keep trying.
Sometimes it’s frustrating; and that’s an expected part of the process. Sometimes we realize that we’ve been working really hard and we’re not getting closer to our goals: and that is the hardest thing. And trying to keep going after we realize that we’ve faced a massive setback can be extremely discouraging. So the important thing at that point is, again, to refocus on your goals.
Remember why you’re trying to do this. Remember the person who you want to become. Remember the results that you’re trying to achieve. Go back and revisit some of the inspirations that got you started on this journey. Try to get back into the spirit of that inspiration, because that’s the energy that’s going to keep you going past any humps and low spots, any sort of difficulties and hitches that you may hit along the way.
Review your priorities, reflect on your goals, and write it all down!
