Don’t be limited by what you’ve been in the past!
This is the antidote for the people who will tell you, “Don’t try to be something you’re not!”
Who are they to decide what your potential is?
Following your dreams means building on skills and experiences that take years to develop.
Whether you’re developing those skills in quiet study or at the gym, it takes extended intense focus and a lot of hard work.
So don’t let yourself be held back by people who weren’t there!
Sometimes people forget that their experience is not the only experience. They assume that because they didn’t do the work, then you must not have done the work, either. But their assumptions are simply false. You’ve been working your ass off!
People fear change.
People especially fear change in others, when as mere bystanders they fear they may get left behind. Too often, such people would prefer to hold you back, rather than do the hard work to make their own life changes.
And let’s face it: there is always someone who would like to see you fail, just so they can maintain their own sense of smug superiority.
So they give you unsolicited advice.
Rather than asking you who you want to be, they tell you who they think you are; and they insist that you will always be the same.
But that’s a lie. We are all changing, all the time, for better or worse.
Feigning benevolence, such people will tell you to accept your limitations.
But limitations are meant to be overcome!
They remind you of your past mistakes.
But we all make mistakes. Your mistakes do not define you! What defines you is the way you pick yourself up and keep going.
And when they see that it’s difficult to control you, they try to tear down your self-esteem. They get demeaning, and perhaps downright insulting; and all the while, they tell you that they’re only trying to help, and that you should listen to some friendly advice.
F*ck that kind of advice. It’s self-serving on the part of the person who offers it. They just want to hold you back so they can feel better about themselves.
Do I sound like I speak from experience? That’s because in the past few years I’ve heard this kind of demoralizing “advice” from more people than I can easily count.
They lack vision.
They lack empathy.
And they are everywhere.
“Don’t try to be something you’re not,” my ass.
Be who you dream of being!
And don’t let any small-minded jibberjab tell you otherwise.
